WHAT'S HAPPENING?

From the Chair of the Council of the National Museum of the Morgan Horse

July 21, 2004

You may have heard rumors about the future of the National Museum of the Morgan Horse. Please be assured that the Museum is here to stay-to serve the Morgan Community, to educate the public about the Morgan Horse, to preserve the treasures of our past and our future, and to continue to "Tell the Story of the Morgan Horse." We MAY have a different landlord within the next three years, or MAYBE a different location. The American Morgan Horse Institute (AMHI), our parent organization, would like not to be in the business of owning and caring for our building, but that does not lessen their obligation, as stated in their by-laws, to see that the Museum exists.

The AMHI has under its wing a number of the non-profit activities of the Morgan Community-the Scholarship Program, Education, Futurity, and, of course, the Museum. Each of the AMHI programs benefits from direct donations from people who are interested in that particular program. At present, AMHI provides our space and utilities and fine art insurance. The Museum Council is responsible for raising the funds for the operating expenses including the staff. The largest part of our budgeted income is from donations made by people like you.

When the AMHI made the decision that they did not want to continue to own the building, they appointed an "Exit Strategy Committee" (I prefer to call it a "Future of the Museum Committee"). These are the members of the committee, with their e-mails: Robert B. Morgan, Chair bob@morganhorsefarm.com; Art Perry - aperryjr@aol.com; Kathie Horman ch55555@msn.com. Martha duPont is also a member of the Committee. As Chair of the Council, I am an ex-officio member severance@bsad.uvm.edu. The AMHI needs to know from the Morgan community what they would like to have happen with their Museum.

We hope that you are interested enough in this Museum that you will contribute as generously as you can, so that we may continue to grow in the way we serve and preserve for our beloved breed. It is especially important at this time for you to show your support for the Museum through your contributions. Please go to the section in this web site under "Become a Friend", and show by your generosity that you care.

Most sincerely,

Gladys Severance, Chair of the Museum Council
