JUSTIN MORGAN THE MAN

Justin Morgan was born in Springfield, MA in 1747. He described himself as a farmer in the early town records, and maintained stallions at stud. In 1788 he moved to Randolph, Vermont, then an independent republic.

He brought a two-year old colt named Figure from Springfield to Randolph in 1791. This colt, later known by his masterís name, became the foundation of the Morgan breed, the only breed of horses that can trace its ancestry to one horse.

No known picture of Justin Morgan exists. However, people who knew him at the time said that this picture of his son captured the pensive expression that he often had.

Justin Morgan was also an accomplished musician, writing music mostly for the Church.
